History

Settled in 1868, Frazee originally flourished as a lumber town and earned the distinction of being the first area settled in Becker County.  With the Railroad Depot, a lucrative flour mill, the Weymouth Hotel, a new school, and a booming lumber industry,  Frazee rapidly grew to become a thriving community and was incorporated in 1891.

Location
The city is in a fast-growing region.  It is approximately 10 miles southeast of Detroit Lakes, 55 miles east of Fargo, North Dakota and 195 miles northwest of Minneapolis.  The community's location along US Highway 10 provides for excellent, easy, and congestion-free access to that major arterial highway.

Infrastructure Updates
The City of Frazee has had an almost complete facelift beginning in 1998.  The city received a Small Cities Grant that allowed the addition of a new water tower, senior housing complex, downtown street lighting, new streets, renovations to the Main Street businesses and new water/sewer lines throughout much of the city.  The improvements added to the recently constructed Fire Hall and City Offices on Main Street.

School Improvements
In addition, the Frazee Elementary and High Schools received major additions in 1998.  The improvements included a high-tech vocational wing, two new gymnasuims, a new weight training room & exercise equipment, golf practicing facilities, a new media center, a state-of-the-art family center for early childhood education and several classrooms.  Outside facilities were also added including a new softball/baseball complex and a football practice field.

Schools
The Frazee-Vergas School District #23 prides itself as being "A Leader in Quality Education."  In addition to the modern facilities, the district boasts small classroom sizes, current technology and an abundance of extracurricular activities.  The committed staff strives to make the district a leader in academics and a top producer of real-world ready graduates.  Frazee is attracting both young families and individuals.  There are a number of reasons for this, but the three most significant are the affordability of housing in Frazee, the proximity to regional job centers and its excellent school system.

Housing Development
The City of Frazee has been encouraged by new housing developments on two sides of the community.  Many new homes have been built within the past three years and those neighborhoods are rapidly growing.  New additions to the town are Red Willow Heights and Lake View Terrace overlooking Town Lake.

  Room for Industrial Growth
Plenty of high-quality water resources and excess wastewater capacity provide opportunity for virtually any industry or housing expansion.  The Industrial Park is situated on the western edge of the city and has room for further expansion.  The rail line that runs through town also provides convenient access for any rail-dependent industry.

Main Street
Frazee's Main Street continues to thrive with new businesses and additional services.  Commercial availability in the downtown provides opportunity for any enterprise.  Low-cost start-up provides incentive for even the smallest business venture.  Many of the downtown businesses have changed their facades and have made the retail area of the town a more inviting space.  It lends itself well to a pedestrian-oriented downtown area.  Being well off the highway, the area retains a unique charm and small-town feel, yet is highly accessible to those outside of the community.

Recreation
Frazee residents and visitors enjoy a recreational lifestyle.  The variety of lakes, rivers and parks in and around the City of Frazee provide opportunity to enjoy many recreational offerings.  With the Otter Tail River winding its way through the city, parks throughout, and Town Lake to the south, city residents are surrounded by natural amenities that all ages can appreciate.  Enjoy swimming, water skiing, canoeing, hunting, fishing, hiking, biking and much more.  Winter fun can include the use of a 16K cross-country ski trail extending through fields and forests and over 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails.

Changing with the Times
Today, the city continues to adapt and ajust with the ever-changing needs of its citizens.  Frazee has a very willing volunteer fire department, rescue squad and many civic clubs that are actively working to better the community.  We see that in the many annual events that draw from all areas surrounding the community.  The city has combined with civic organizations and has built a beautiful Event Center that is busy throughout the year with weddings and community events.  It can hold up to 400 for any event easily and the decor lends itself to any occasion.
