How does the City calculate the cost of a permit?
This is not an easy question. The City permits are based upon VALUE of the project.
1. An example of this is roofing: The dollar VALUE amount we use is $200.00 per square of roofing material. Each square typically covers approximately 100 square feet. If your roof is 1400 square feet there would be 14 squares needed to cover the roof. The value of the project is considered to be $2,800.00; 14X$200.00. Our fee schedule is a sliding schedule that takes that value and places a fee amount of $54.00 along with a state surcharge of $1.50. Your building permit would cost you $55.50 for that roofing project.
2. A storage shed value is calculated per square foot. Frazee uses the lowest figure put out by the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry to obtain a value of this project of $38.09 per square foot. Any shed that is 120 square feet or more requires a permit. If you are building a yard shed of 140 square feet the calculation is as follows: 140X38.09=5,332.60. That value using our fee schedule makes the permit cost $81.00 with a $3.00 state surcharge. Your building permit would cost you $84.00 for that storage shed.
3. Another example is fencing. If you are looking at placing a fence that is 6' high or more, you will need a permit. the value placed upon that fence is $12.00 a running foot. If you are putting up 100 feet of fence, the value would be $1,200.00. The permit, again using our fee schedule says that your permit would cost $29.00 with a .60 state surcharge. However, even if your fence is to be less than 6 feet, you need to come in to get a fence permit. There is no cost then, but still needs consideration of it's location.
Other information of interest regarding your building permit
How long is your permit valid? For most small projects such as siding, roofing, interior and exterior remodeling, window replacement, sheds, garages and other similar construction activities you will have 180 days to complete your project unless you apply in writing for an extension. That extension would give you a total of 60 months for the completion.
Do you have plans to build a new home? As expected, there are many considerations for that very important project. To begin your project you will need to bring in 2 sets of plans and schedue a meeting with the Building Official before any work can begin. He will help you get started correctly.
